I don’t know what was better about today:
1.) Ending my Universal Motown Records internship with an intern luncheon [fettuccini alfredo with garlic knots -- compliments of Universal, of course! (She was even like: “get a salad too! get a special drink! whatever you want!”)]
2.) Leaving with a promise of a recommendation letter/reference, business card of the manager, an invite to intern with them again, and compliments on how I wrote the best artist bio/blurbs of the interns!
3.) I received an email from the executive editor of our town magazine saying my story idea was great, and to call her to work out the details.
4.) Because I placed high in the Art of the Northeast competition, I was invited to do a small work to be sold for a charity/benefit in the fall.
…and tomorrow? Back at MTV. |

tonight: i hung out with a friend in the pool, then we went out to dinner and went to a store to shop... where we ran into a girl from high school.
me: (talking on phone) oh, hold on (to girl from H.S.) does your dad still work at MTV? her: no me: oh. (goes back to phone)
we all three chatted at some point, but just enough to know that no one else is really doing anything productive with their time.
THURSDAY:
- @ MTV - attended spike tv budget meeting. [ok, in a room of 6 other people out of everyone in the building, who walks in? that kid from harvard (the physics major) who was on the train that time talking about his MTV internship and how great it was... right near me when I still didn't have mine yet. this very same kid i was complaining about -- how it wasn't fair that harvard majors got the MTV gigs -- was sitting across from me with his backwards spike tv hat. glorious. i later told my supervisor about it: "hey! you know that boy sitting next to you..." and he did these great impressions of him.] - worked on stuff for senior vice president of nickelodeon - attended executive speaker forum for interns and found out... sherlin is here too! we're the only non-newhouse kids from syracuse that i've seen so far. a lot of cornell people are here, and others from good universities. (another intern who works near me is from U. of Chicago!) I was introduced to some very nice interns. - received note from megan (other intern in nearby department) reminding me to get us spots on TRL nest week for anytime in late August. - during the executive meeting, the guy speaking mentioned a friend he had at Showtime. turns out: that very same guy knows my dad, and had mentioned this exec before to him. this exec's friend is not only getting his masters from NYU in business, but is also helping me put together my resume in the best way possible. - the speaker also mentioned the MTVu animation contest, and how great the winners were. I immediately emailed one of the winners that i keep in contact with (from NYU's film school) and told him the good news. turns out mtv has been sort of screwing them over lately, so he asked me to use my clout see if i could get things rolling. i can get him email addresses, access to the building, and i can even email the general manager. - my friend wants to crash the daily show studio (i have access) but i doubt i'd be able to sneak him in. it's different because i have an actual desk at the time square building, so I could call him up. i think only i could just go to comedy central, but we'll see...
i just noticed that i now keep a million to-do lists, and always have a million people i have to send emails to... but it's great. sherlin does the double-interning thing like i am: but with BMG instead of Universal.
[side note: it's neat because originally the woman who wanted me to intern said that the position available was too "administrative" for someone with my talents. so they found me another position where i don't have to do that stuff. it's amazing! i love mtv...] |

MTV casting calls, TRL signups, meetings, awesome supervisors... yes, all in a day's work at the epi-center of times square.
So I went to a Spike TV meeting (out of office) with Sam, and on the way over he was telling me about his time working at TRL in production. But he said the live TV aspect was a little too much. I guess once Melissa Joan Hart had asked him: "if i mess up, we can just re-tape right?" and hes like: "it's a... LIVE SHOW".
"I mean what do these people think the "L" stands for in tr-L!?"
Later, after the weekly staff meeting (these people are so funny) the other intern (megan) and I went to go sign up for a spot on TRL. They reserve spots for interns, which is neat.
Then later on I took a break from the assignment I was doing for the Senior Vice President to go to a MTV casting call for viacom employees and interns only. I go to megan, "i just want to see what this is all about!" so we found our way there with this other girl (it's amazing how nice everyone is, and how the best conversations can be struck up with just about anyone in those elevators!) and it was fun -- just filled out some paperwork and they took a snap shot - no biggie.
I just figured, hey, while I'm here, I should do everything offered. Later on this week I think there's going to be an executive speaker for all the interns in the MTV building, then in mid-August recruiters will come help us out with our resumes! It's amazing.
During the weekly meeting, one of the other interns made a "weekly newsletter" highlighing some news and funny stuff that has happened recently. (although I am no one to talk about brown-nosing -- i sent the office martha's vineyard fudge when we went on vacation last week, to which my supervisor said to the other interns: "this is how you rise up the corporate ladder!") so later, my supervisor came over and said we should make a newsletter thing too, except with pictures and stuff (him and amanda are going to an event in san francisco this weekend) and then send it to all of the departments!
all in all, this is fabulous. i mean, these are jobs! you can tell people love working at these places. and unlike school -- it doesn't come to an end in 4 years. it can be as long as you want... and i do still want to pursue video game and commercial composing, scriptwriting, and fashion stuff... but i want to make sure i have a cool job while doing it.
p.s. once someone said MTV was like a big dorm building -- everyone from all of the different companies and floors seems to know eachother ~ and it's true |

| so i guess the folks at mtv don't use the subway. |
[Jul. 16th, 2004|05:02 pm] |
...yesterday we had to go to a meeting elsewhere and when we walked outside into busy time square, there was a town car waiting for us. excellent way to travel.
(on the way:) "i mean, at trl, we once gave away a million dollars. at spike, it's $10." "AND you have to pay taxes on it!" "AND do you have any idea how many accounts I had to go through to even get the $10!!"
today i found out i have a myname@mtv etc. email address on outlook. it also connects to everyone in the company. so not only do i have access to everyones contact information, but i get the daily company emailings and perks. you can log onto their specific site with your user name and get company news, find out where you can get discounts with your ID card, as well as places to submit any creative ideas. I also realized I have access to three VIACOM buildings, including: anywhere in the MTV building, the Daily Show studio, and all of Comedy Central.
[although fashionable, some people at nickelodeon don't know their basics:] "how much are jimmy choo shoes?" "jimmy what? jimmy choo-choooo!"
i saw courtney (the TRL caster) outside smoking talking to a few people -- one of which was the intern she had in the spring. which makes sense, if you can do it during the spring you can definitely do it during the summer.
...and these two MTV film students won an animation contract with MTV, they just have to find people to write the series. i wanted to help, but i don't have that much experience with that sort of thing (they've gotten hundreds of responses from real writers). however. they said they may use me as a "consultant", because i seem to know what the 'mtv audience' is looking for. while it wouldn't be paid now, if/when the show got picked up, they said i would be hired. you mean, reading scripts to see if they're entertaining is a job? who knew.
[p.s. last night james and i went out with tahlia and tanya. it was so much fun. you know it's an awesome time when everyone's stomach literally hurts from laughing...] |

| oh, fun |
[Jul. 13th, 2004|10:44 pm] |
i have an MTV id card now.
highlights from the nickelodeon staff meeting: (vice president trying to get everyone's attention:) "YALL!!!"
"someone said something bad about it... i forget when" "it was last year, and it was probably me"
-going over spots to host big events, but realizing they're missing a part of the country... "what about... this area..." ::motions to middle section of U.S.:: everyone: ::blank stares::
and of course, every time the President slapped down her hand on the table, a huge ::THUNK:: sounded as the giant rock on her finger hit the table...
anyway. one of the people i work with went to syracuse -- he gave me a tour of Spike TV, TV Land, and various other Nickelodeon floors. the TV Land floor is so artsy... the people who decorate these floors amaze me. when i was in the elevator going down it stopped on some other floors, and one of them was pitch black except for some weird lighting and then the doors opened up on this other floor that was completely decked out in red.
(oh and i saw this spongebob replica made of sponge material that was easily 11 feet tall and 6 feet wide. it was amazing, to say the least.)
yea so considering my first assignment is to call up every governors office in the united states -- I'm guessing i'll get over my phone phobia real quick... |

[Jul. 9th, 2004|11:16 pm] |
OK -- update! i have my old internship still at universal motown (and i just found out about another su industry student who interns there! but i had to run to meet someone at that point - so i couldn't stay and chat too long) and i just got a new one with MTV Networks -- under their Nickelodeon/spike TV public affairs. this means commuting to the MTV building 3 days a week -- like its my job ;-) and get this: fridays are half days! (except for the TRL folks). so i'll still have pool lounge out time :-)~
anyway, city life is fun. i just got a call on my cell from a new york office, something about a job -- they had gotten my resume through something or another. that's fabulous. i've never held a real "job" before, i just do odd ball stuff and art/music contests/competitions... i didn't even put universal or mtv on my resume yet-- and it already gets attention? this rocks! :-)
anyway, this isn't my real journal. but i'll update it once in a while :-) |

[Jun. 4th, 2004|09:20 am] |
the maids woke me up today-- they came earlier then usual!! oh well
wheeewww let's update!
ok so a couple things have happened. harpers bazaar in the end turned out they couldn't give me credit -- and i don't think i could have even gotten credit towards my major for them anyway because it's not ANYTHING to do with music-- so i was like fine forget it. so that means i was 2 days at Universal Motown Records and three days without anything!? so hmmmm i decided to give my buddy over at MTV networks an email... ;-)
and sure enough a week later I was back at the MTV building in times square interviewing-- but this time at Nickelodeons corporate headquarters-- floor 38! it is so pretty!! the carpets are all different colored, the walls splashed with color, TVs everywhere, a lobby filled with bright chairs-- amazing. then she brings me inside-- "oh my office is a little messy, we can talk in the lounge!" OK the lounge is filled with posters, plants, and couches in a room with complete windows streching aroundn it-- and we are on the 38th floor in timesquare so you could only imagine in the view!!
she is *amazed* by my resume. she can't believe someone can play the piano, AND do art! i take for granted the whole music thing. i think -- ok wow, music, whatever. it's just something i do? but people in the corporate world are absolutely amazed! "oh my gosh we'll have to get a piano in here!" and "do you have to practice every day??" but basically she looked at my award list and was floored.
I met a couple other people, (one of which was an intern they liked so much they hired back -- score! :-D) and everyone seems generally really nice, and they all LOVE their jobs: "i would NOT be here 6 years if i didn't love it here!" my supervisor said. It's also the very corporate environment i was looking for. it would be business casual, and she said i could attend business meetings on tuesdays and get this-- fridays are "half days"! sheesh! plus i'd get to work with all the different departments. she started asking me for my artistic opinion on the flyers and everything- it was awesome!
every place i've interviewed has had an amazing office-- but the VIACOM/MTV Networks offices are definatley the best. this nickelodeon one has stairs leading down to the 37th floor, like *within* the office-- it's hard to explain, but it's very expensive-- but when you own more than one floor you can knock down part of it to create stairs and it's really chic!! to work in these places? like being a kid forever!! i am so excited to be able to put "Viacom" on my resume-- that opens the doors to everything they own! my main goal is to find a fun day job while still being able to pursue arts, music, and scriptwriting. everyone here is ridiculous nice-- probably because they are so happy! plus a lot of people at MTV and Universal do their own music recording and playing shows on the side, which is cool.
and yesterday at Universal, the new intern "billy" is so nice! we definately had fun trying to figure out the tasks we were given. and i switched to wednesdays now so i can go to viacoms meetings on tuesdays-- meaning i'll be at universal with amanda longer :-p (even though she leaves june 23rd-- booo!)
ok i have some magazine work to do. billy and i did some write ups for some artists and nellys new single to be posted on their sites/universals sites and emailed out to people-- and our supervisor said we did a great job! yay :-D
life is good. its fun to commute into NYC with my dad! when i went to interview initally we got lunch at this fabulous grand central place. i now have (almost) mastered the subways and directions! i don't think i'll take the subway to timesquare (even though its super easy) -- because i'll have to get my excercise somehow :-D OK this is my last friday off-- must be productive ;-) |
